From Lemons to Lemonade Our Top Five Tips for Dealing with Down Days

My best walking buddy!
There are some times when life just gets you down. We've had one of those months at our house. Not only do we have a new baby (that is a good thing) but it is making mommy's emotions go crazy. Then, before she has hit the month old mark we have had a small fire resulting in the loss of our oven, the microwave quit, D stepped on some hot charcoals resulting in a very burnt foot, and E has been working three jobs to help make ends meet and is never home. Needless to say, it has been a month when I have simply needed regular pick me ups so, here are my tips for helping pick yourself up when life has you down.

1. Go for a walk! I'm not huge on exercise (chasing the kids every day is enough for me) but I do know that when I'm having a hard time going for a walk can help burn the extra energy and encourage my body to relax and sleep better. Sleep is a huge healer!

2. Do something you love! It's been a Gilmore Girls and sewing kinda month for me.

3. Read a book! It can be anything. I'm known to pull out a good novel but I also love books like Chicken Soup's From Lemons to Lemonade that have short stories for any time that I need a little boost.

4. Get out of the house! This can be super hard when you're feeling down but going someplace almost always helps me feel better. This time of year I recommend something outside - the farmer's market and local street festivals are some of my favorites.

5. Make a point to spend time with those you love! It could be a date night or a night of pizza with the girls. It really doesn't matter, just be around other people and enjoy yourself!

Cat in the Hat: Let's Go on an Adventure!

We're still hanging out this summer and living mostly in the basement to avoid the heat as we don't have air conditioning in our home. Generally we spend the mornings playing and then at nap time I let the older kids watch a movie while the younger ones (and sometimes mom) sleep. This week we had the awesome opportunity to watch Cat in the Hat in Let's Go on an Adventure and the kids loved it!

Is it educational? Sure thing! My kids favorite episode on this one is "Meet Salmon Sam". I thought this was awesome as we live in an area where you can actually see the Salmon during their yearly migration so no we're planning a trip to go watch.

Why are the bonus reasons for loving it? I love Cat in the Hat because he is great for all ages. I know that when we watch a Cat in the Hat movie my older kids will learn something but my younger kids will not get bored because they can't follow along.

How do we rate it? The Kerr family gives this film 5 out of 5 stars.

Octonauts: Calling All Sharks Movie for Toddlers

It's summer time and although I love to keep my kids busy outside there are some times that it is just too hot, even in Idaho, to do anything other than spend time in the basement with a good movie. This month we have been given the opportunity to check out Octonauts: Calling All Sharks as a family and I have to say for a kids movie it is one of my favorites to have on.

Is it educational? Absolutely! This particular collection is all about different kinds of sharks. They do skip some of the basic facts about sharks in general but there are a lot of interesting things to learn about different species of sharks, where they live, and what special traits they have.

Why are the bonus reasons for loving it? The music in this film is some of the best I have heard in a kids movie. This is one of the few that I can listen to and work at the same time because it is not overly distracting.

How do we rate it? The Kerr family (specially the boys) give this film 5 out of 5 stars. The kids ask to watch it again and again.

Dressing Up for July 4th

At the Kerr house we just love celebrating the 4th of July! There are so many fun things to do as a family and it gives us a great opportunity to teach our children about the wonderful country they live in. But more about that later. One fringe benefit of any holiday at the Kerr house is that I get to dress up the kids. I've got some great finds to share with you this year to help you get ready for the 4th of July. All of them can be ordered through 6/30/14 to guarantee delivery by the third so make sure you check them out today.

Most important of course is the outfit. For the girls we found this adorable Betsy dress. This is an adorable cotton chevron dress with an elastic neckline making the fit great on most any toddler. And because our 4th plans include a swimming party, we found a fun new swimsuit for F too. I love that the Alice Swimsuit comes with a cute skirt for out of the water fun.

For the boys we found these adorable patriotic sun hats and chevron ties. Although they won't wear them both at the same time they will allow my kids to show their patriotic side most of the day - and throughout the year. I've also got some fun flag suspenders to go with the ties that I need to get pictures of because they are adorable!

Other fun accessories we will be using for our 4th of July adventures are the Boba 4G Carrier - a must have so we don't have to take the strollers out in the crowds. And of course, some fun Red, White and Blue diapers for adorable bottoms.

Do you plan to dress up for the 4th of July? Tell us about your fashion plans with a comment below!
